BCTA Sports Health, Wellness and Nutrition ProgramThe BCTA philosophy, regarding health, forms the foundation of our programs and activities. Our mission is to nurture and support the "whole" person:
Physically Through the availability of nutritional consultations and parent-workshops about the Nutritional Needs of Young Athletes and the BCTA Training and Fitness Activities, our goal is to increase the strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility and endurance of our participants. Mentally A willingness to learn, clarity of thought, and efficient problem solving abilities are essential to intellectual development. The BCTA programs and activities encourage such "mental toughness" through: (1) requiring participants to learn the rules and regulations of tennis, (2) setting up relevant motivational and educational activities for members of The Team, and (3) learning how to strategize tennis matches as a problem solving exercise Emotionally The ability to express feelings and needs in a positive manner is a major challenge for people of all ages. By insisting that our participants observe BCTA Tennis Etiquette, we gently promote the development of healthy emotional restraint. The BCTA etiquette requirements, along with a children's book on suggested court behavior and the rules of tennis, are given to each child who enters the BCTA. BCTA is fortunate to have as one of our sponsors, MINDSOURCE®, with its stress management system for helping families understand and resolve personal and family stress. Socially Learning how to get along with others -- family, peers, teachers and other authority figures -- is one of the major "jobs" of young people growing up. The BCTA is a healthy social environment in which children can refine their social skills. Through our monthly articles, the BCTA shares information with parents about how to support the developmental needs of children, who are involved in competitive sports. Spiritually
This holistic approach to youth athletic development is the creation of founder/director Beverly Coleman, who brings a highly educated background -- rich in health science, education, research and child development. Because of their commitment to the life long wellness of youth, they have chosen to be one of the primary sponsors of the BCTA and work together with Beverly to provide health education to participating families. BCTA families may benefit further from this relationship by taking advantage of the informative New Frontiers "Smart Shopping" store tours conducted by Beverly two Wednesday mornings each month (click here). Below are some of Beverly Coleman's credentials in these areas of expertise:
